SKH Roundup: December 22nd 2025
Another year comes to a close, and nobody took the time to warn me
Year's End
It's the end of the year, dear reader, and nobody warned me. I was wholly unprepared to learn that Christmas is this week. Who put that there? I barely just got out of bed this morning, and it's February, I thought?
I guess not. I really should pay closer attention to the rising and setting of the sun.
Anyway, hail, dear reader. I wish you warmth and good health in these cold, cold days. Unless you're in the southern hemisphere, in which case, I guess uh, enjoy the weather?
This year has been a lot. I don't need to tell you that. But the fact that we're here, keeping an eye towards what is happening—that matters. It does.
It's so easy to lose sight of life during all this madness. Yes, things have gotten wild out there. Yes, it's not trending particularly great. And yet if you go for a walk, you'll hear the wind blowing. You'll see critters preparing for the winter. You'll hear festivities and smell wisps of smoke from chimneys and hearths. Or maybe it just smells like rat piss, I dunno where you live, but lemme just paint a nice picture, alright?
If you've been finding it difficult to keep on top of things, congratulations: you are a human being. If you've found it incredibly painful to read about atrocities every day, you are a human being. If you feel as though you need to fix it, and are constantly reminded how powerless you are, well, again: fleshy person. That's you.
We're all doing what we can to get by. No one person can fix everything, and nobody is expecting that from you. Remember: it takes a village. In 2026, let's plan to push back against the madness by making meaningful connections to other human beings. Let's take on the challenge of protecting, supporting, and caring for one another. Let's plan to do good for the sake of doing good. Because truly: why not?
Now, with that said...
Doing Right By Our Troops (Lie)
The Trump administration is doling out checks for $1,776 to members of the military. They said it was coming from "tariffs." That was wildly untrue.

[REDACTED]
The [REDACTED] files were finally released. The [REDACTED] administration posted them on the [REDACTED] website after the [REDACTED] and [REDACTED] voted to pass a law requiring [REDACTED] to release the [REDACTED] with [REDACTED].

Marvel at the Greed
Disney has decided that Marvel fans should pay them more money for the privilege of sloppier plot lines and phoned-in fan service. It it's okay because they need that money so they can give OpenAI a billion dollars.

Here's the Weather

More Stuff
As we close out the year, let's just do a quick scan over some good things from across this year. Turns out, good stuff still happens!
- Renewable energy sources produced more energy than coal globally for the first time this year with China leading the charge there
- One of the Nobel prizes this year went to a team of three scientists who created a device to extract potable water from desert air using no other energy than ambient sunlight
- We're inching ever closer to a true cure for HIV. One example would be researchers in Australia who discovered a way to use mRNA to get white blood cells to reveal the HIV hiding inside of them, creating a possible vector for targeting the virus
- More good biological stuff: researchers at Carnegie Mellon University have identified a new way to target bacteria aside from typical antibiotics in an effort to push back on antibiotic resistance
- The indigenous Yurok Tribe in California finalized a record setting land-back deal, reclaiming 73 square miles (~47,000 acres) of ancestral land and sacred sites. The deal took 23 years to complete.
